Maple Sugaring

We got to watch the syrup-y goodness that we put all over our pancakes get made this weekend. When I told Isaac we would be going to watch how they make maple syrup he got really excited. "Like How It's Made for real?" The kids love to watch the Discovery Channel show, How It's Made.

We went to one place where this family had been tapping trees for generations. Hannah and Isaac were more interested in sliding down the crusty snow covered hills. You can see a tapped tree with a bucket behind her. This was mostly for show since most of the farms use the tubing in the picture below. The kids weren't as interested in the process as Dan and I were, but they really liked the maple candy. Man, that stuff is tasty.

These tubes run straight from the trees to the sugarhouse where it's boiled down to syrup.

Then we went to a local lumber company and got to watch them slice up a maple tree for woodworkers. Dan liked this part the best.

This was just too much excitement for Gwen and she fell asleep in the car on the way home.
